Technical phone interviews are a huge time saver, but they still require you to be on the phone with the candidate for the entire interview. This personal interaction is a very important part of the hiring process, but there is a level of screening that can take place before you pick up the phone.
The biggest problem with trying to automate too much is that it can be a bad experience for the candidate. They do not want to waste time working through complex trivia.
I am working on a new product that will make it very easy to automatically screen candidates, but will also give the candidate a good experience. It will involve having the candidate go through a series of fun challenges where they fix broken code. Stay tuned for updates.
